Carbondale Mine

Surface and underground coal mining has affected nearly 40,000 acres in the 683 square mile Raccoon Creek watershed in southeastern Ohio. The Carbondale Mine discharges an average acidity load of 218 tons per year. Efforts to restore the watershed began nearly 20 years ago in Gallia County with the formation of the Raccoon Creek Improvement Committee;

Ohio University Research Lab

Hydrogen Lab ~ Gerardine Botte, associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, has developed the patent-pending ammonia catalytic electrolyzer technology, which efficiently converts ammonia into hydrogen to produce inexpensive fuel.

Greenfuel Lab ~ Researchers with Ohio University’s Consortium for Energy, Economics, and the Environment (CE3) have been investigating several novel alternatives in the past decade, however, and have begun to capture the public imagination: vehicles fueled by algae, ammonia waste from factory farms, or biodiesel made from cooking grease.

Waterloo Coal Mine / blast

According to a rough estimate there are about 25,000,000 tons of shaft coal in the county.  Waterloo Mine is surface mining coal and at the site visit a blast was conducted.
